Born before the creation of the world, Crowley was once an angel. But doubt, questions (and a certain amount of hanging about with the wrong people) put an end to that. He likes to say he didn't Fall, he just sauntered vaguely downwards, but the end result is the same.
Cursed with a snake's body (part of the time, anyway) and eyes to match, Crowley is a demon. A proper, sent to Earth to cause trouble, slithering around the Garden of Eden, sort of demon.
In the thousands of years since his Fall, Crowley has been a value employee of Hell. But, of course, the don't know about The Arrangement he has with the angel, Aziraphale! The two have been trading assignments and helping out one another for millennia.
For all his bragging and bravado, Crowley isn't really the best demon... His heart just isn't in the big sins.
