• During the second World War, Ragnor told Magnus to stay away from London.
More specifically, that if he set a toe outside of New York, he was going to turn him into a mouse.
He might have also convinced Catarina to help make sure he stayed there.
That’s just what you have to do when you love someone that jeopardy friendly.
• Ragnor has been collecting tattoos for centuries. Some of them had faded away entirely over the years.. and some he’s had removed.. and others have been covered over. They read like a story of his life, bits and pieces of his story etched in seamless ink.
• Ragnor was raised Catholic, christened in the faith as a baby, and attended mass every Sunday until he left England for parts unknown.
He was just shy of his 120th birthday (two weeks, in fact) when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church in Germany, effectively breaking away from the Catholic faith, and changing the path of religion in the Western world.
However, Ragnor is, in fact, as close to Agnostic as you can get, when you know that gods and demons exist.
• Coming from a cartography and drafting background, Ragnor’s art is usually quite technical, with a high degree of accuracy and detail. He rarely uses colour, and prefers to draw places rather than people (though he’s made exceptions for both, and some of his more elaborate maps are shaded with touches of colour).
• Out of habit (as it was commonplace for most of his life) Ragnor does wear cologne most of the time. His usual standby is Penhaligon’s Bayolea, a scent that holds notes of the Bay Rum that used to be so popular in the society set.
It’s a light, fresh scent that he wears with a careful hand; after all, it’s not the sort of thing people should notice unless they’re quite close!
BIOGRAPHY
Born in England to Nordic immigrant parents, Ragnor was the youngest of 12 siblings. Originally trained to be a blacksmith like his father, Ragnor always had dreams of becoming a cartographer, and seeing more of the world than their small town– but his parents worried for his safety. In their village they could protect him, their faerie child; people knew about him, and accepted him.
Later, after the passing of his parents, when his siblings were grown with children of their own; and it became more obvious that Ragnor wasn’t aging, the warlock took himself, and his glamour, out to see the world. He worked along the Silk Road for years, traveling back and forth through India and Asia, becoming not only a decent cartographer, but picking up a wide variety of other skills as well.
But eventually, he returned home to England, where he met his wife, Agathe. She was the first warlock he had ever met personally, though he’d heard stories through his travels. She was beautiful and headstrong– stubborn to a fault– and brilliant. A midwife in her own right, and able to keep Ragnor on his toes. He loved her hopelessly, and in less than a year, they were married.
After Ragnor’s time in the Tower of London, in 1554, they returned to her native Germany. While there, living in the country once more, they adopted their daughter, a warlock they named Rhiannon. And for the first time in over 150 years, Ragnor had a family again.
It wasn’t to last. When Rhiannon was just a little girl, Ragnor was temporarily summoned back to England. While he was there, his wife and child were accused and trialed as witches, and sentenced to death.
Bitter and grieving, it would be a long time before he let anyone else into his life.
Eventually, his life was turned upside down by Magnus Bane, a young warlock that tried Ragnor’s patience, dragged him around on ridiculous adventures, and eventually become an essential (if endearingly aggravating!) part of his life.
And when it was time to hang up his hat, Ragnor finally took the position as High Warlock of London, like they had been asking him to. He kept the position through both world wars, and through until the late 70′s.
He had been offered an academy position in Idris, teaching young Shadowhunters about history– Mundane and Downworld alike. He finds his work very satisfying, and genuinely believes that teaching tolerance for the Downworld will make life easier for everyone.
